SOL INVICTUS. SOUND & PERFORMANCES FOR THE WINTER SOLSTICE

Also this year the Swiss Institute celebrates the winter solstice through a program of performances and live sets in Palermo, Milan and Rome. The shortest day of the year: the winter solstice is, by convention, the moment which corresponds, due to the position of the Sun with respect to the equator, to have the longest night and the shortest day. An astronomical event full of symbolic meanings – sometimes even controversial – which was celebrated in ancient times by pagan populations before the advent of Christianity: the Romans celebrated Sol Invictus, the Egyptians the birth of Horus, the Greeks venerated Helios. After the prevalence of the winter dark hours, the Sun seemed to be reborn and became invincible (from the Latin Sol Invictus). A moment of the year which, ancestrally, marks the transition from darkness to light.

The evening in Palermo organized in collaboration with the Sant’Elia Foundation, in the hall of the Triumph of Diana.
