Giovedì 21 a mezzanotte (Venerdì 22 ore 00:00) Fondazione Sant’Elia inaugura ESSE, la nuova mostra personale di Rafael Yossef Herman dedicata al tema ambientale dell’inquinamento luminoso.
La mostra è patrocinata dal Ministero della Transizione Ecologica, dalla Regione Siciliana, dal Comune e Città Metropolitana di Palermo, in collaborazione con la Fondazione Teatro Massimo, l’Università degli Studi di Palermo e la partnership tecnica di Villa Igea, Rocco Forte Hotel e Sky Arte e Whitewall in qualità di media partners.
Ispirata alla Sicilia e inaugurata nella Giornata della Terra, la mostra è rappresentata da una esse rovesciata quasi ad evocare il segno dell’infinito descritto da Herman stesso; “infinito incompleto”.
Curata personalmente dall’artista, ESSE sarà allestita nelle dodici stanze del piano nobile di Palazzo Sant’Elia e sarà un evento in evoluzione, radicalmente diverso dal vernissage al finissage.
Con una Call per idee lanciata dall’artista e da Fondazione Sant’Elia, la mostra si arricchirà di nuove opere realizzate in luoghi incontaminati dalla luce, suggeriti dal pubblico.
Da Palermo, ESSE raggiungerà il mondo.
“Questo progetto è parte di una ricerca più ampia che attraverso la mia espressione artistica e altre, potenzialmente infinite, vuole scoprire ciò che non si vede. Una ricerca sull’assenza, che non significa inesistenza: sull’invisibile che non significa impalpabile.
Questa mostra siciliana è dedicata all’inquinamento luminoso, che non esito a definire uno dei più importanti problemi ambientali. Parto dall’idea che noi non vediamo la realtà, che tutto ciò che c’è sotto gli occhi normalmente è falso, condizionato dalla visione stessa e dalla luce. Ma la luce cambia la realtà” spiega l’artista.
La mostra prevede un corposo programma aperto al pubblico.
All’interno delle prestigiose sale settecentesche di Palazzo Sant’Elia si svolgeranno diversi incontri curati direttamente dall’artista: appuntamenti, conversazioni, panel e concerti con ospiti locali ed internazionali sempre in dialogo con il tema della mostra.
Il Maestro Omer Meir Wellber, Direttore musicale del Teatro Massimo, omaggerà l’evento dell’inaugurazione di mezzanotte, con un concerto dedicato alla tema della mostra con trio di piano, violoncello e violino.
La mostra resterà aperta fino al 22 Giugno 2022.

Rafael Yossef Herman’s solo exhibition, dedicated to the environmental issue of light pollution, will open at midnight on the evening of Thursday, 21st April at Palazzo Sant’Elia.
The exhibition is organised under the aegis of the Ministry of the Environment for the y and the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in collaboration with the Fondazione Teatro Massimoand University of Palermo, and in technical partnership with the Rocco Forte Hotel Villa Igea and media partners Sky Arte and Whitewall.
The exhibition takes inspiration from Sicily and will open on Earth Day. From a graphic viewpoint, it’s a reference to the symbol of infinity, which Herman himself describes as an “incomplete infinity”.
ESSE is personally curated by the artist and will be exhibited in the twelve rooms of Palazzo Sant’Elia’s main floor. It will be an event “in progress” that will radically change from the opening to closure. The artist and Fondazione Sant’Elia have launched a “Call for Ideas”, whereby the exhibition will be enhanced with new art works created in locations free from light pollution that have been proposed by the public.
“This exhibition is part of a broader research in exploring what is invisible through my artistic expression and other potentially infinite artistic means of expression. It is an exploration of absence, which is not the same as “non-existing”, and about the invisible, which is not the same as “impalpable”.
This Sicilian exhibition focusses on light pollution, which in my opinion is one of the most challenging environmental issues. I start from the idea that we cannot see reality and that everything that is normally under our eyes is false, onditioned by bothlight and vision itself. Light changes reality”, explains the Artist.
The exhibition will also offer a rich public program of events.
The prestigious seventeenth-century rooms of the Palazzo Sant’Elia will host several gatherings hosted by the artist including talks, conversations, panel discussions and concerts with local and international guests that are all in dialogue with the theme of the exhibition.
Maestro Omer Meir Wellber, the Music Director of the Teatro Massimo, will pay homage to Rafael Y. Herman at midnight on the opening night with a concert dedicated to the exhibition performed by a trio of piano, cello, and violin.
The exhibition will run until Wednesday, 22 June 2022.
